Rosemary

Hello, lovelies!

Meet Rosemary, our newest addition to the family.

She's a cute little couch companion.
Rosemary (or Rosie, as we've begun calling her) is an eight week old African Pygmy Hedgehog. She was born on September 3, 2013 and we adopted her on October 11, 2013.

First photo I took of Rosie on the day of her adoption!
I'd researched hedgehogs in the past, and I happened upon a local and reputable breeder while doing so. I bookmarked the website and then all but forgot about it. After getting our hopes dashed and having to re-home a kitten we'd adopted earlier this year, we were leery of getting another pet and we didn't talk about it very much.

During our vacation last month, after we'd gotten back from the aquarium trip, J turned to me and said, "I've been thinking... we should get a hedgehog." I think my squeal of delight was so loud that the car in the next lane heard us.

Well, he certainly didn't have to tell me twice! Within two weeks, I'd contacted the bookmarked breeder, paid for a newly-born hoglet (what awesome timing that was), and ordered all of the supplies for our new quill-covered addition.

She has been a joy. We've learned that everything on the hedgehog forums is true -- you absolutely do have to socialize hedgies in order for them to adapt to you. They are not like dogs and cats -- they don't come to you after being around you for five minutes. We get her out for several hours a night to hang out with us while we watch TV or snuggle on the couch, and she has come a long way. She used to hide and sleep in her little fleece cozy-sack and she would refuse to come out, going so far as to huff and ball up if we tried handling her directly.

Grumpyface.

We've only had her three weeks, and now she's not shy at all. We get her out and she's all over the place. She crawls on us, she attempts to climb couch cushions, she sniffs everything in her path, she shoves herself under our hands or our arms and goes to sleep.

Sleepyface.

Climbing the cushion -- VERY successfully. Part monkey, this one.
Everyone else in our lives seems to have fallen in love with her, too. I can't wait to take her to family gatherings during the holiday season! So much fun for all of us (and so many new smells for her, ha)!

So that, my friends, is the story of little miss Rosemary (so far). Prepare yourselves; I'm sure many more photos are to come in the future!

Saturday 9: So Much to Say

Thanks to Kelly for recommending The Dave Matthews Band. (Hear it here.

1) The lyrics refer to a baby's "one year of crying." When was the last time you cried ... felt weepy ... or at least teared up? I cry regularly -- I think I'm making up for never crying when I was younger. I always thought Mom was so strange because she cried when she was happy, sad, stressed, looking through photos, watching movies, reading books... but I believe I'm destined to be the same way. I re-read Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park last week (I'm still working on a major blog post focused on Rainbow's works -- she's an amazing author) and it made me cry, just like it did the first three times I read it.

2) Let's lighten it up a little. When was the last time you laughed really hard? A couple of days ago when J attack-tickled me. I am ridiculously ticklish and I scream and laugh and flail about and can't breathe if someone tickles me. I was being a grumpybutt and he risked his physical well-being to make me smile like the lovely husband he is. Haha! ♥

3) Do you have "so much to say" that hasn't been said yet? Tell us if you owe someone a phone call, note, email or text. Always. Sometimes I feel like I fail as a friend because I don't return every phone call/note/email/text that I receive. It isn't because I'm lazy and it isn't because I'm not appreciative -- it's simply because I forget to return the favor for a while (I am incredibly easily distracted), and then I remember it, and then I feel bad because I feel too much time has passed to return it. I'll eventually get some things mailed out and some phone calls placed, though.

4) Earlier this summer, Dave took a bike ride before a show and his tire blew out. He didn't have a cell phone with him and was afraid of missing that night's performance. Fortunately two fans -- driving to see Dave Matthews Band in concert -- recognized him by the side of the road and gave him a ride to the show. Share a recent act of kindness you either did, or received. I've been on the receiving end of a lot of kindness. I've had my phone returned to me, unscathed, after leaving it at a restaurant for a couple of hours. I've had my purse returned to me, unpilfered, after it fell off of my car and into a busy parking lot. Back when J & I were dating and driving an hour every day to meet up with each other, I got a flat tire in the middle of that hour-long drive (in the middle of nowhere) and a complete stranger fixed it for me so that I could meet J at the nearest tire store. I've returned a couple of forgotten phones to people when I noticed they'd been left behind at restaurants or at stores, but that's about it.

5) Before he hit it big, Dave Matthews was a bartender. What job did you have right before the one you have now? I had a job at Lane Bryant, and I loved it. If the pay wasn't so terrible (I was part-time, sure, but I was part-time management and I was barely clearing minimum wage) or if I was working strictly to keep from being bored, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Working there wasn't like working, it was like hanging out with friends and getting paid to do so. The girls I worked with were the best. I'm so sad that our Lane Bryant closed!

6) The Dave Matthews Band recorded an album live at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, in the mountains near Denver. Is there a trip to the mountains in your future? Nah, I doubt it.

7) Do you suffer from hay fever or allergies? I live in a river valley. Pollen allergies are an unfortunate part of life. Certain times of the year, everything is coated in a yellowy-green hue. It's really gross, but I'm sure it keeps the folks at Mucinex happy.

8) What's in your pocket right now? A receipt for my cherry limeade from Sonic!

9) American Express promotes "Small Business Saturday," and encourages us to shop at local, independent retailers. Is there a shop, boutique or restaurant in your town that you're particularly fond of? Yes! We support local book stores and restaurants whenever we can!

Montagu's Burgers, where they doodle on your plates (& make a kick-ass burger)!
Coldwater Books!
Rivertown Coffee. Love the lattes and the atmosphere.

Quiet. Peaceful. Perfect.

We decided to go for a drive Sunday evening.
We ended up at the park as the sun was setting.
We were greeted at first by only two little turtle dudes.

...and then all of their buddies joined us. See the little specks? Turtle heads!

We could only stay until dark, so as the sun was setting we started walking lazily toward the park entrance.
The sky was perfect.
We heard a flock of geese approaching us from a distance...
...and we lingered just long enough to watch them fly overhead before getting into the Jeep and driving away.

Good News!

My precious 15-year-old baby girl isn't on her way out -- she's actually healthy, aside from a pretty severe urinary tract infection! I broke down crying in the vet's office when they told me she was healthy -- I knew I had been stressed about it, but I didn't realize just how much until then. I've never snuggled her so close in my life. Now she's back home, she's eating again, she's using her litter box again, and she's not even holding a grudge against me for sticking a syringe of amoxicillin down her throat 2-3 times a day.

AND, in other good news, my cornbread turned out beautifully! I wish Granny were still here. She'd be so proud. I may or may not have put just a few too many chopped jalapenos in there, but luckily we like our cornbread spicy!

Also, J's parents are flying in from California to close on their house, finally (they've been trying to sell their house here in Alabama ever since last April when they packed up and moved to Cali). I requested to leave a couple of hours early on Thursday so that we can go have dinner with them. It'll be great to see them again. I love them both so much -- every time I'm around his family, I boggle at how lucky we are. Not every couple is lucky enough to have an amazing support system on both sides. I love his family as much as I love my own, and he feels the same way towards mine. ♥

Hope all of you are having a lovely week.

Gray

Hello, lovelies.

Pardon my absence. I've had some rather gray days the past couple of weeks...

...but I'm sure that my colors will come back soon.

Love.

Christmases Past

Hi, loves.

It has been busybusybusy around our place lately -- we've been packing, moving, unpacking, and when we were aaaaallllmost unpacked, we had to scramble around to get Hubs ready for his flight to Florida for his management-in-training week of fun. It has been a hectic couple of weeks, for sure, but I am absolutely in love with our new apartment and I have every intention of posting photos here... but first, I must finish unpacking, clean it properly, and then decorate for Christmas.

So for now, in lieu of an actual update, you get some of my favorite photos from Christmases past, which you guys may or may not have seen around my favorite corner of the internet -- the Flickrverse.

'Tis the season for bokeh and laughter!

So what about you, my lovelies? Are you in the holiday spirit yet? My Christmas spirit has been delayed by consistently above-average temperatures (we're talking 70-75 degrees here; I haven't worn a hoodie in two weeks). Cross your fingers that December temperatures arrive below the Mason-Dixon line in time for a white (or at least flurried) Christmas! ♥

Scattered update

Things that have happened since the last time I updated....

Windows down, tunes up, heart open
Love

We took a small road trip to attend J's cousin's cookout. I met more of his family and a good time was had by all. Meeting family in smaller increments has been fun, since it tends to be more personal than an enormous family get-together and it enables me to remember names and personalities more easily. Poor J, he's just going to be thrown into the Cabler clan this holiday season. Due to the fact that we still lived an hour and a half away from each other until December last year, and then when he moved here he was working 70 hours a week, neither of us were able to attend each other's Christmas gatherings. I've met a sizable chunk of his extended family, but he's only met a handful of mine. I'm not at all worried about him fitting in, though -- all he has to do is give a big "Roll Tide!" at Christmas and he'll be accepted and welcomed immediately.

Whisks

J has been putting in some long hours lately, but that's all coming to a close. For those of you who aren't aware, he moved here last year to run the kitchen of a local restaurant that was in danger of closing. He took it by storm, lowering the food and labor costs, tweaking with recipes and the menu, and increasing the customer base.  He did every single thing the owner asked him to do, and he was proud that he had made such significant changes in such a short amount of time -- until three days before Christmas when the owner called him and said "the restaurant's closed, come get your last check."  Then he was out of work for five weeks until his current workplace (another locally-owned and operated restaurant, focused on seafood) picked him up.

Untitled

He moved up the chain quickly there, he was given a big promotion and raised salary just three months after being hired, and then last week the restaurant announced its closure. Its last day of operation was Saturday. J hasn't even been in this town for a year and this has happened to him twice. He says that when you go into the restaurant business, that's just part of it and it's bound to happen eventually, but it's still disheartening to know that he's given 110% both times and he's done more than was ever asked of him and here we are for the second time in a year.  This particular restaurant had a fresh fish market attached to the front of it, which is thankfully being kept open for the time being, and as such, J is one of two people who got to keep their jobs despite the restaurant itself closing. I just hope that the fish market lasts long enough for us to figure out a new plan.

The town we live in is choked with restaurants -- there are so many restaurants to choose from that very few of them do well enough consistently enough to profit. That makes it dangerous for him to work here, especially in a Mom-and-Pop place instead of a corporate environment, and he would go corporate if it were his only option but he's told me more than once that going corporate is essentially the death of a serious chef's career.

I told him that no matter what happens, we'll figure something out. He and I have both been passing out applications and résumés like hot cakes, so something is bound to come up for us soon.

Corn

I had other things to write about, but I feel like this post is scattered enough, so perhaps I'll save them for another post.

One happy thing, though?  Fall weather is creeping in, slowly but surely. I'm so thankful for that... I truly do come to life in the fall.

Fall weather, topless Jeep, happy day.

Until next time, lovelies.

Daisy snuggles.

I got to snuggle my baby girl on Sunday while J and I were at my parents' house. I miss her company so much, especially when J's at work and I have the house to myself. If I didn't think it would wreak havoc on both her nerves and J's allergies, I'd have taken her with me when I moved.  Allergy medication would probably solve the latter, but she is getting so old I wouldn't chance the toll it might take on her poor little nerves.  She's lived in that house for the entirety of her life; any kind of major change now would probably only unnecessarily stress her.

She politely waited for me to finish eating (she's seriously the nicest cat ever -- she's never bitten anyone, scratched anyone, begged for our "people" food, climbed onto surfaces where she shouldn't be ... I've never seen another cat as sweet-mannered) and then hopped onto my lap, rested her chin on my arm, and stayed there for over an hour, purring happily the whole time.

She'll be fourteen on Halloween. I love her. ♥
